About the founder

Short bio (35 words)

Mike Oak is a mathematical statistician and the founder of Plumb, a consumer sleep brand based in Ashburn, Virginia. He's a long-time side sleeper who got tired of going through three knee pillows a year.

Medium bio (80 words)

Mike Oak is the founder of Plumb, a pre-launch consumer sleep brand based in Ashburn, Virginia. A mathematical statistician by training, Mike has spent years building research and analytics tools, including work in AI retrieval systems. Plumb is his first physical-product venture. The product — a three-piece knee pillow kit that attaches to a knit thigh sleeve — was designed to solve the one problem every loose knee pillow has: it doesn't stay where you put it.

Long bio (140 words)

Mike Oak is the founder of Plumb, a single-founder consumer sleep brand launching in 2026. Mike is a mathematical statistician with a background spanning institutional research, AI-driven analytics, and data engineering. Before Plumb he built decision-support tooling for institutional clients in financial and policy domains; outside Plumb he continues that work as Michael Oak Advisors, a separate consultancy. Plumb is his first physical-product venture and his first direct-to-consumer brand. The motivation is personal — Mike is a side sleeper who went through several knee pillows looking for one that would stay in place through the night. After enough frustration he sketched a three-piece design that anchors the pillow to a knit thigh sleeve. The product is pre-prototype as of mid-2026 and is heading into a Kickstarter campaign later in the year.

The pitch — boilerplate language

For convenience, here are pre-approved boilerplate paragraphs you can quote directly. All copy below has been reviewed for FTC compliance and contains no medical claims.

One-sentence description

Plumb is a three-piece sleep-alignment kit for side sleepers — a knit thigh sleeve, a removable washable cover, and a contoured foam pillow that attaches to the sleeve, so the pillow stays where you put it.

Two-sentence pitch

Plumb is the knee pillow that stays where loose pillows won't. A pre-launch consumer sleep brand from Ashburn, Virginia, founded by mathematical statistician Mike Oak, Plumb's three-piece kit attaches the foam pillow to a knit thigh sleeve worn on the upper thigh — so when you turn, the pillow turns with you.

Paragraph-length description

Plumb is a pre-launch consumer sleep brand based in Ashburn, Virginia. The product is a three-piece kit designed for side sleepers: a knit thigh sleeve (viscose made from bamboo) worn on the upper thigh, a removable washable cover, and a contoured hourglass foam pillow (CertiPUR-US certified polyurethane). The covered pillow attaches to the sleeve at the inner-thigh contact zone — when the sleeper turns, the pillow turns with them. Plumb is not a medical device. It's a comfort and sleep-alignment product designed to solve one mechanical problem: loose knee pillows don't stay where you put them. The brand is bootstrapped, single-founder, and headed for a Kickstarter campaign in late 2026.

What we won't claim

For transparency, here is what Plumb deliberately doesn't claim — and why. If your story is about FTC-restrained marketing in the wellness category, this section is the angle.

  • Plumb is not a medical device. It doesn't diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition. If you have a medical issue affecting your back, hips, knees, or sleep, talk to your physician.
  • We don't name specific medical conditions. No sciatica, no herniated disc, no arthritis, no RLS. Naming a condition implies treating it; treating implies substantiation we don't have.
  • We don't use the word "orthopedic." It pulls products toward FDA medical-device classification and adds no SEO value.
  • We don't have doctor endorsements. No "doctor-recommended" or "chiropractor-approved" language. Endorsements require disclosed material connections and substantiation we don't have at pre-launch.
  • We don't make outcome promises with numbers. No "85% of testers slept better." Pre-launch, we have no methodology that supports that kind of claim.
  • The founder's personal back-pain story is investor-side, not marketing-side. Founders' personal experiences are FTC endorsement claims under the 2023 guidance. Plumb's marketing focuses on the mechanical product, not on the founder's body.
